Abstract
Security breaches or insecurity are among the most discussed issues in Nigeria today as the country has been replete with many cases of compromised security. Nigerians hardly go a day without one case of security breach or the other either on armless, innocent citizens or armed security personnel and their facilities. This ranged from rural communities to urban centres or cities, the forests and farms to the highways, schools, churches and mosques, among others. The palpable fear of possible attacks and being kidnapped by kidnappers and bandits alike on the highway has become a worrisome situation for both travellers and their loved ones at home. Most commuters on Nigerian highways today are not even scared of a possible auto accident on the highways but are scared of falling into the hands of kidnappers and armed bandits. Consequently, this paper interrogates the security situation on the Nigerian highways using the Abuja-Kaduna highway as a case study given the very many notorious attacks and kidnaps that have been perpetrated on the highway. The study relied on the use of primary sources such as eyewitness accounts and secondary sources of data in examining the security situation on the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
